Waiting in the Offing

Akiko Itoyama · 2005 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary

Two colleagues who joined the same company in Fukuoka, a woman and a man, once promised that whichever died first, the other would destroy the hard drive of his or her computer. When he dies, she has to keep the promise. Itoyama, who had worked for a manufacturer herself, won the 134th Akutagawa Prize for a story of friendship between a man and a woman that is not romance, told without sentiment.
