Wings

William A. Wellman · 1927 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

Two young men from the same small town, rivals for the same girl, train as combat pilots and go to France, one carrying a photograph and the other a stuffed bear for luck. Wellman, a former pilot, mounted cameras on the aircraft and had the dogfights flown for real, with thousands of soldiers staging the Saint-Mihiel offensive below. It took the first Academy Award for best picture and remains the only silent winner.
