Azazeel
Presented as the scrolls of a fifth-century Egyptian monk named Hypa, found and translated from Syriac, it follows his travels from Upper Egypt to Alexandria and on to Jerusalem and Syria. Along the way he is caught in the doctrinal quarrels that split the early church over the nature of Christ, and in a running argument with a tempting inner voice. The novel was controversial among Egypt's Coptic Christians and won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2009.
