Barton Fink
A New York playwright with a Broadway hit about fishmongers is signed by a studio in 1941, put up in a peeling residential hotel and told to write a wrestling picture. The wallpaper sweats, the salesman in the next room is relentlessly friendly, and nothing goes on the page. The Coens wrote it while stuck on another script and took the Palme d'Or, the directing prize and the acting prize at Cannes in one year.
