Black Narcissus
Five Anglican sisters are handed a derelict palace on a Himalayan ridge, kept by a local general as a house for his women, and set about running a school and a dispensary there under a wind that never drops. The altitude, the painted rooms and a hard-drinking English agent who despises the whole enterprise work steadily on vows that held easily enough at home. Godden drew on the years she spent in India, and the book set the pattern of enclosed women undone by landscape that recurs across her later work.
