Children of Gebelawi

Naguib Mahfouz · 1959 CE · Novel · Arabic · Contemporary

Below a walled mansion nobody living has entered, the founder Gebelawi casts out one son for pride and another for disobedience, and the alley outside inherits an estate whose terms none of its people can read. Each generation throws up one man to stand against the gangsters running it — a shepherd, a healer, a fighter, a chemist. Serialised in al-Ahram, condemned from al-Azhar, and never published in book form in Egypt in Mahfouz's lifetime.
