The Harafish

Naguib Mahfouz · 1977 CE · Novel · Arabic · Contemporary

Ashur al-Nagi, a foundling raised by a blind sheikh, walks his family out before a plague empties the alley, comes back to a quarter nobody is left to hold, and rules as clan chief for the poor rather than off them. Ten generations of his descendants inherit, squander and abuse the same position while the harafish — the rabble who own nothing — wait for another like him. A late return to the alley of the early fiction, built as ten linked epics.
