Miramar

Naguib Mahfouz · 1967 CE · Novel · Arabic · Contemporary

An Alexandria pension kept by a Greek widow fills up out of season with four Egyptian men, and a Delta peasant girl comes to work there, running from an arranged marriage. Each man narrates the same winter again — a retired Wafdist journalist, a dispossessed landowner's son, a broadcasting official, a worker on the make — and Zohra is a different woman in every telling. Written the year before the 1967 defeat and read since as its diagnosis.
