Clara Callan
In 1934 Clara Callan, a schoolteacher in a small Ontario town, keeps a diary and writes letters to her sister Nora, who has gone to New York to become a radio actress. Depression-era propriety, a brief affair and a violation shape the two women's separate courses. Told entirely in diary and correspondence, it won both the Giller Prize and the Governor General's Award.
