Guardian Devil

Xavier Velasco · 2003 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Violetta, a Mexico City girl of fifteen, steals her parents' savings and flees to New York, where she lives by her wits and by other people's money. Years later she tells the story to a ghostwriter, and the telling is itself part of her con. It won the 2003 Premio Alfaguara and brought Velasco's cynical, urban voice to a wide Spanish-language readership.
