Heidi

Johanna Spyri · 1881 CE · Novel · German · Victorian

An orphan of five is handed over to a hermit grandfather on an alp above the Rhine valley, where she keeps goats with a herd-boy and learns the mountain by season. Three years on an aunt fetches her to Frankfurt as companion to an invalid girl, into a house of clocks and table manners, and she begins to walk in her sleep. Spyri's Swiss idyll has never been out of print and fixed the template of the child cured by mountain air.
