E. E. Cummings · 1926 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A patriotic orator gabbles a speech stitched out of the anthem, the pledge and the phrase by gorry by jingo, then stops and drinks a glass of water. A soldier lying in the deep mud remembers an aunt knitting socks and a sister making earwarmers while he dreamed of his Lucy's Etcetera. The title comes from a foreword holding that a poet who says twice two is five is telling the truth, and the wrecked sentence becomes a method here.
