Le Jour se lève

Marcel Carné · 1939 CE · Film · French · Modernist

Barricaded in his top-floor room after shooting a man, a foundry worker smokes through the night while police mass below, remembering the flower seller he loves and the seedy dog-trainer who poisoned everything between them. Jacques Prévert wrote the screenplay and dialogue, and Jean Gabin's trapped proletarian fixed the doomed hero of French poetic realism at its summit. The flashback structure was unfamiliar enough in 1939 that the distributor added an opening title explaining it.
