Make Way for Ducklings

Robert McCloskey · 1941 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Contemporary

A pair of mallards flying over Boston turn down the Public Garden on account of the bicycles and nest instead on a small island in the Charles, where a policeman brings them peanuts. Once the eight ducklings can walk in line and come when they are called, their mother marches them off the island and straight into the traffic of Beacon Hill. McCloskey took the Caldecott for it and kept live ducks in his New York flat to get the drawings right.
