Mayombe

Pepetela · 1980 CE · Novel · Lusophone African · Contemporary

A column of guerrillas moves through the Mayombe forest in Cabinda, dropping bridges and ambushing Portuguese convoys, and the commander they call Fearless holds it together against the tribal arithmetic that decides who gets trusted with what. The political commissar loves the same woman as his commander, headquarters wants a report on that commander's indiscipline, and the narration keeps breaking off so individual fighters can put their own case in the first person. Pepetela wrote it in the forest while fighting there, and it reached Angolan readers only after independence, its portrait of ethnic suspicion inside the movement being the reason for the delay.
