My Night at Maud's
A Catholic engineer in wintry Clermont-Ferrand has privately resolved to marry a blonde stranger he watches at Mass, when a Marxist friend strands him for a snowbound night in the apartment of Maud, a freethinking divorcée, and talk of Pascal's wager becomes a live test of it. Pascal's Pensées, argued over at the film's center, is the presiding text rather than a source. One of Rohmer's Six Moral Tales, it staked a whole film on conversation about grace, chance and choice, and made the gamble pay.
