Nightmare Abbey
Scythrop Glowry, gloomy heir to a gloomy Lincolnshire house, shuts himself in a tower to reform mankind and cannot choose between two women. His father's guests — a transcendental philosopher, a morbid poet, a man certain of universal conspiracy — talk each other into deeper melancholy over dinner. Romantic gloom lampooned by a writer who knew the poets he was aiming at.
