Othello

Stuart Burge · 1965 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A Venetian general, newly married and newly posted to Cyprus, is worked on by the ensign he passed over for promotion until he believes his wife has gone to his lieutenant. Burge recorded John Dexter's National Theatre staging almost intact, the camera close on Olivier's darkened skin and lowered voice. It drew four acting nominations and, decades on, sustained argument about blackface.
