Pinjar
Puro is carried off from her Punjab village by Rashid, whose family reckons hers owes them a woman from a quarrel two generations old, and when she gets free and reaches her parents' door they will not open it, because a daughter taken back is a family finished. She goes back, is given a Muslim name, and is living that second life when 1947 divides the province and both new states begin recovering the women the other side took. Amrita Pritam left Lahore herself that year, and this is the Partition novel read alongside her lament addressed to Waris Shah.
