Pippi Longstocking
A nine-year-old with a horse on the veranda and a suitcase of gold coins moves alone into a tumbledown house at the edge of a small Swedish town, her mother dead and her sea-captain father washed overboard. The two children next door find that she outlifts policemen, sleeps with her feet on the pillow, and treats school, coffee parties and burglars as equally absurd. Lindgren improvised her as bedtime stories for a sick daughter.
