Pirkei Avot
Six chapters of maxims from the rabbis of the first two centuries, opening with a chain of transmission that runs from Sinai through Joshua, the elders, and the prophets to the men of the great assembly, so that every saying after it arrives with a name attached. The advice is short and unsoftened, make a fence around the Torah, do not judge your fellow until you have stood in his place, the day is short and the work is great and the master of the house is pressing, and it turns repeatedly on what a person owes when nobody is watching and what is owed to a teacher, a colleague, and a stranger. The only tractate of the Mishnah with no legal content in it, printed in the prayer book and read through the summer Sabbaths.
