Song: Go and Catch a Falling Star

John Donne · 1633 CE · Poem · English · Renaissance

A list of impossible errands opens it - catch a falling star, get a mandrake root with child, tell where the past years are, find who cleft the devil's foot - and all of them are set as easier tasks than the one named at the end. Ride ten thousand days and nights until age snows white hairs on you and you will come back swearing that nowhere lives a woman both true and fair. The bargain in the last stanza is the joke: even if such a one were next door, she would be false before the letter could reach her.
