Sula

Toni Morrison · 1973 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

In the Bottom, a hill settlement above the white town of Medallion, Ohio, Nel Wright and Sula Peace grow up in facing houses: one scrubbed and quiet, one run by a one-legged grandmother who takes in strays. Sula leaves for ten years of college and cities, then returns with a birthmark over her eye the neighbours read as a sign, doing as she likes in a place that cannot afford her. Morrison's second novel, and her sharpest account of a town that needs somebody to call evil.
