The Death of Baldr

Norse myth · c. 1200 CE · Myth / Legend · Norse / Germanic · Medieval

Troubled by dreams of his own death, the most beloved of the Æsir is made safe when his mother takes an oath from every thing in the world not to harm him, every thing but one plant she judged too young to swear. The gods turn his invulnerability into a game, throwing weapons at him for sport, and Loki puts a dart into the hand of the blind god Höðr. Snorri tells it as the hinge of the whole mythology, the first death among the gods and the opening of the sequence that runs to Ragnarök.
