The Jerk

Carl Reiner · 1979 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Navin Johnson, raised by Black sharecroppers in Mississippi and mystified that he cannot keep a beat, sets out for St Louis on his birthday and finds work pumping gas, then guessing weights at a carnival. A patent on a spectacle attachment makes him suddenly and enormously rich. Reiner built the whole thing around Steve Martin's stand-up idiot and gave the decade its purest gag delivery system.
