The Kebra Nagast
Makeda, queen of the south, travels to Solomon's court for his wisdom, is caught by an oath about theft and a dish of spiced food, and returns home carrying his son; grown, the boy goes back to Jerusalem for his father's blessing and comes away with the Ark of the Covenant and the firstborn sons of Israel's elders. Compiled in Ge'ez at Aksum out of Hebrew, Coptic and Arabic material, it makes Ethiopia the successor of Israel and its emperors the line of David. Cited in the 1955 constitution as the ground of Haile Selassie's rule, it is also a founding text of Rastafari.
