The Lives of Others
A Stasi captain who teaches interrogation is assigned to wire an East Berlin playwright's flat and listen from the attic, on an order that has more to do with a minister's interest in the man's partner than with the state. Night after night he types up what the couple say, and then begins editing the reports. Donnersmarck's debut took the foreign-language Oscar and drew argument in Germany over whether such an officer existed.
