The Night of the Hunter
A West Virginia man robs a bank for his children's sake and is hanged for it, and the preacher who shared his cell, LOVE and HATE inked across his knuckles, arrives to court the widow and find where the money went. Only the boy knows, and he promised his father not to tell his sister or anyone else. Laughton directed once, borrowing from the German silents and Griffith; the notices ended his directing career.
