The Peacemaker and the Great Law of Peace

Haudenosaunee tradition · c. 1450 CE · Myth / Legend · Haudenosaunee · Medieval

A man born among the Wendat crosses the water in a stone canoe carrying word of a law that would end the blood feuds between the Five Nations, and finds his speaker in Hiawatha, whose daughters have been killed. Working nation by nation with Jigonhsasee, they come at last to the holdout Tadodaho, whose crooked body and snake-tangled hair are combed straight when he consents, and the weapons are buried under a white pine. Haudenosaunee foundational history, recited from wampum for centuries before Seth Newhouse and the confederacy chiefs set down written versions around 1900.
