The Promised Land
In 1755 a retired captain of no birth takes a royal commission to plant the Jutland heath, land the crown has failed to settle for a century, in exchange for a title and a manor house. The magistrate who claims the heath as his own sets out to break him, while runaway serfs and a Romani girl attach themselves to the camp. Nikolaj Arcel adapts Ida Jessen's novel The Captain and Ann Barbara, absent from this archive; the result competed for the Golden Lion at Venice and won best Danish film at both the Bodil and Robert awards.
