The Story of Babar
A young elephant whose mother is shot by a hunter runs out of the forest into a town, where a rich old lady buys him a bottle-green suit, a bowler and a motor car. Two cousins arrive to fetch him back, and he drives home to the forest with the wardrobe and the table manners intact. Written up from a story Cécile de Brunhoff told her sons, it founded the modern picture book and anchors the argument about children's books and empire.
