August 1914
In the third week of the war the Russian Second Army walks into East Prussia without maps, supply or working telegraph, and its commander rides forward through the forest looking for corps that no longer answer. Around the encirclement Solzhenitsyn assembles staff officers, a young Tolstoyan volunteer and the ministers in Petersburg who allowed it. The first knot of The Red Wheel, it was conceived against War and Peace and argues directly with Tolstoy's account of how history moves.
