One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn · 1962 CE · Novel · Russian · Contemporary

A peasant carpenter serving a ten-year sentence in a Siberian labour camp works through one January day, from the reveille hammer to lights-out, scrounging bread and laying brick in a freezing wind. Everything that matters is counted in grams, in minutes and in degrees below zero. Published in Novy Mir with Khrushchev's personal consent, it was the first legal Soviet account of the camps and it made the subject speakable.
