Matryona's Place
A schoolteacher back from the camps takes a room in a Vladimir village with an ailing widow who has no pension, no livestock worth keeping and a houseful of relatives circling her timber cottage. She works for nothing, lends herself to every neighbour's harvest and asks for none of it back. Composed in 1959 and printed a year after Ivan Denisovich, it set the pattern for the Russian village prose of the decade that followed.
