The First Circle

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn · 1968 CE · Novel · Russian · Contemporary

In a Moscow research prison where mathematicians and engineers eat well and sleep under sheets, the inmates are ordered to build a device that will identify a voice from a wiretapped telephone call. The caller warned an embassy about atomic espionage, and every man working on the machine knows what finding him means. Named for the limbo of Dante's Inferno, where the punishment is the absence of hope, it went abroad first in a version Solzhenitsyn had cut himself.
