Dyskolos
A rich young Athenian sees a girl at the shrine of Pan in a hill village and discovers that her father farms a stony plot alone, speaks to nobody, and throws clods at anyone who comes up the path. Every attempt at an introduction founders on an old man who will not be spoken to, until an accident at the well puts him at the mercy of the household he has refused. First prize at the Lenaia in 316 BC, then lost for sixteen centuries and recovered almost whole from an Egyptian papyrus in 1952.
