First Dream
Night climbs over the world and everything in it goes to sleep, down to the sentries of the sleeper's own body; released, the soul rises to the summit of its intellect and tries to take in the whole of creation at one look. Dazzled into failure, it falls back on working upward by categories, a rung of being at a time, and stalls on the first single object it tries to exhaust. Written in the silva of Góngora's Soledades, and the one composition its author said she made for her own pleasure rather than to order, it stands at the head of Spanish American letters.
