Madeline

Ludwig Bemelmans · 1939 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Twelve little girls in two straight lines live in an old house in Paris covered with vines, and the smallest of them frightens at neither mice nor the tiger in the zoo. She wakes crying in the middle of one night, and Miss Clavel runs down the hall to find an appendix that must come out by morning. Bemelmans built the rhymed Paris from his own boarding-school years, and its cadence is the most imitated in English.
