Mean Streets

Martin Scorsese · 1973 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A young man collecting debts for his uncle in Little Italy holds his hand over candle flames to test what penance is worth, and keeps covering for a friend who borrows from loan sharks with no intention of paying. A neighbourhood of social clubs, back rooms and feast days closes around both of them. Scorsese shot it fast on location to jukebox records, and made Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro.
