Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Widowed in New Mexico with an eleven-year-old son and a mortgage, a woman who sang in clubs before she married packs the car for Monterey and gets as far as Phoenix, then Tucson, taking piano bar work and then waitressing. Her son sizes up each new town and each new man faster than she does. Scorsese made it straight after Mean Streets at Ellen Burstyn's request, and she won the Academy Award.
