Metropolis

Fritz Lang · 1927 CE · Film · German · Modernist

In a future city the sons of the rulers play in gardens above ground while the workers keep the machines running in shifts below. The master's son follows a woman named Maria down into the depths, and his father commissions an inventor to build a machine-woman in her likeness to break the workers' faith in her. Between head and hands, the mediator must be the heart.
