She Had Some Horses

Joy Harjo · 1983 CE · Poem · Native American · Contemporary

The title poem names horse after horse — horses of bone and ivory, horses who wait to be slaughtered, horses who lie down and refuse to move — until the ones she loved and the ones she hated turn out to be the same horses. Elsewhere a woman hangs from a thirteenth-floor window over east Chicago unable to decide, and Noni Daylight drives all night with the radio on rather than be still. Harjo's third collection and the one that made her name; she later became the first Native American to serve as United States Poet Laureate.
