Songs of Enchantment
The compound is worse off than before, the spirit-child's father has taken to preaching to people who will not listen, and his mother walks out; a masquerade comes down the road at the head of a political procession and nobody will say whose it is. The white antelope, the blind old man and the photographer's pictures all come back, and the other world is now openly at work in the party's business. The middle book of the trilogy, shorter and darker than the one before it, and the point at which the road stops standing for anything hopeful.
