Sunday Bloody Sunday

John Schlesinger · 1971 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

Across ten days in London, a divorced employment consultant and a middle-aged Jewish doctor each love the same young sculptor, know about one another through a shared answering service, and settle for the share of him they can have. Penelope Gilliatt's original screenplay refuses every scene of confrontation the triangle seems to promise, ending instead on Peter Finch speaking straight to the camera. The doctor's homosexuality is presented without apology or catastrophe, which in 1971 was itself the radical gesture.
