Tabu: A Story of the South Seas

F. W. Murnau · 1931 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

On Bora Bora a young pearl diver loves a girl the tribal elder declares tabu — consecrated to the gods and forbidden to all men — and the lovers flee into the money economy of the trading ports. Begun with documentarian Robert Flaherty and finished by Murnau alone, who died days before the premiere, it won the cinematography Oscar and stands as the last silent masterpiece from Hollywood's German émigré.
