The Emperor of Ice-Cream
In one room a muscular man is told to whip curds in kitchen cups while wenches dawdle in the dress they wear every day and boys bring flowers wrapped in last month's newspapers. In the next, a sheet embroidered once with fantails is drawn over a dead woman whose horny feet stick out. Both stanzas close on the same line, and Stevens named it his own favourite for its deliberately commonplace costume.
