The French Connection

William Friedkin · 1971 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Two New York narcotics detectives working street corners in winter follow a hunch from a nightclub to a Brooklyn candy store and up to a French shipping executive with a Lincoln full of heroin. The pursuit runs through stakeouts in freezing doorways and a car chase beneath an elevated train. Friedkin shot on real streets with documentary methods, and it became the first R-rated release to win Best Picture.
