The Immigrant

Charlie Chaplin · 1917 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

Seasick steerage passengers pitch across a rolling deck on the crossing to New York, and the Tramp wins at cards, loses the winnings to a thief and later finds a coin that will not stay in his pocket in a restaurant run by an enormous waiter. The huddled arrivals roped off as the Statue of Liberty slides past is the joke and the indictment at once. The two-reeler Chaplin was proudest of, and one the FBI held against him.
