The Kid

Charlie Chaplin · 1921 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A tramp finds an abandoned baby in an alley, fails to hand him on to anyone else, and raises him into a partner in a window-breaking racket, until the county authorities come to take the boy to an orphanage. The rooftop chase and the scene at the truck are built to break the comedy open into distress without changing register. Chaplin's first feature-length work, its opening card promising a smile and perhaps a tear.
