The Neverending Story
A fat, bullied schoolboy steals a copper-coloured book from an antiquarian's shop and hides in the school attic to read it: a world called Fantastica is being eaten by a spreading Nothing, and its dying empress has sent a young hunter to find the cure. As the hunt goes on the boy starts to suspect that the book knows he is there. Ende disowned the 1984 film so completely that he went to court to have his name taken off it.
